The Case for Compassion
I watched my boss hurriedly hit the mute button. We were onboard a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO), floating in the Atlantic Ocean, and dialed into a large international call with operations leaders from around the world. “Welp, I messed that one up! Yikes.” He chuckled and shook his......
Finding The Purple Unicorn: Boardroom Myths, Half-Truths and Cold Hard Facts
In my 40-year career in energy and heavy industry, I rarely had contact with the board directors who could block our investment projects or dismiss our CEO. Come With Me Offshore… As An Assistant Driller
As the planes whiz by in the background, I find myself firmly planted in the seat at the gate just before boarding, a routine familiar to many of us who must fly to our next point of transit before reaching our final destination: The offshore platform accessible only by helicopter.......
Chapter 2 – Arlene Chow, Dig Deeper: My Leadership Journey
During my years in BP Alaska, I had three different jobs. I went in as Infrastructure Manager, and almost immediately faced my first challenge. There was an earthquake and a volcanic eruption, the snow turned black, and it became completely dark, with temperatures dropping to -60°F with wind chill. I......

Texas Actress AnnaClare Hicks Strikes Oil
Before she was a surgeon, she was a volunteer firefighter. Her favorite song is “A Few More Rednecks” by the Charlie Daniels Band. She loves to fish, drives a red Ford F250 (diesel, she specifies), is responsible for restoring the Alamo, and, by the way, manages the 13 million acres of state land that fund the largest educational endowment in the United States. Meet the first female Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office: Dr. Dawn Buckingham.
“The General Land Office (GLO) is the tip of the spear for the state of Texas, charged with protecting our resources, our border and our history,” says Commissioner Buckingham. Created in 1836, GLO was formed to “work through overlapping land grants, literally be the keeper of the maps,” that determined who owned what after the Texians and Tejanos won independence from Mexico. The office of the Commissioner predates the office of Governor.
